Vista Defrag Boot Time
Defragmentation is executed in the background while the system is running and normally optimizes most files. Some system files, however, are locked by the operating system while it is running. These files can only be defragmented when they are not being used by the operating system. This is only possible at an early start phase of Windows, even before the graphical login prompt appears. At this point, no system operating processes are enabled and you cannot start any application. This phase is called Boot time defragmentation.
Puran Defrag is an easy to use disk defragmenter that offers boot-time defragmentation, automatic defragmentation, intelligent directory optimization, background (low priority) operation and optimization of free space. Other features include built-in scheduling, automatic restart or shutdown after defragmentation and integration with Windows. Quicker System Boot Time. As your computer getting older, it takes longer to startup your computer and begins to work. Smart Defrag helps fix this problem easily. Configuring Boot Time Defrag feature, those files on HDD that cannot be moved while system is running can be quickly defragmented for faster startup.
It is now possible, using this feature, to defragment a file which is being used exclusively by the operating system. Depending on the operating system, for example, this can be the swap file, the registration database as well as the MFT (Master File Table).
- The options for the boot time defragmentation can be easily set in the settings dialogue under boot time defragmentation.
- Please select whether you want to useboot time defragmentation regularly at every system start or one time only at the next system start.
You can also disable boot time defragmentation.

Sep 1, 2009i am having really slow boot ups lately on my laptop. i have done things such as virus scans, defrag hhd, scan regestry with REGESTRY BOOSTER 2009, defrag regestry. i also have no start up programs in my strat up folder. Problem is that i could start from dead start to a fully loaded desktop in 98 secs....now it takes 124 secs to do the same thing. where it takes the longest is at the boot screen i just watch it load then the windows logo comes up and it smooth sailing from there. i would say it takes about 8-12 secs after the windows logo to get to desktop.
Disk Defragment

I used Vista's. It ran for more than 4 hours and never finished. My used disk space increased from 251 GB to 268 GB.
Disk Defragment Not Completing
Jun 4, 2010Vista home premium SP2. In XP the disk defrag pushes CPU close to 100% and takes a few minutes to sort out the disk. My Vista defrag seems to get bored with defragging and goes to sleep. It does the following
* displays Analysing...
* Puts focus on button Defrag Now
Select the button
Select C: and deselected D: (a small partition)
Select Continue
* Button becomes Cancel Defrag
* displays Defraging hard disk
CPU rises to 75%+ for a few minutes and then falls to

3rd Party Defrag Software Can Affect Computer Start Time/performance
Oct 10, 2009I read in one of the posts that 3d party defrager could mess up start speed and comp performance, whereas vista's built-in defrager keeps certain files in ceratin places to increase efficiency and speed.

Auslogics Disk Defrag
Oct 26, 2009I only recently upgraded to the current version of Auslogics Disk Defrag, where there is a new feature called 'Defrag and Optimise'. (for more read Auslogics - Frequently Asked Questions). In this there is an option to 'Move System Files to beginning of disk' (see Shot1). Does anyone know exactly what this does [in a non-complex explanation]? (I know a bit about computers, but I'm not an 'expert'). I'm curious to know does it actually 'work' or is it just one of those 'overrated features taht doesn't really do anything'.
Defragment Query, Should Run The Defragment Tool Regularly
Sep 13, 2009Last night I defragged my HD using Auslogics defrag program. I've just turned on my PC and checked how much free space I now have and I've gone from having 54.2gb free space on one partition of the HD to 51.3gb after the defrag. How can this be? Surely there should be more empty clusters/free space on my HD now than was before? Would it best for me to run the defrag tool a few more times? This is the first time I've actually defragged the HD since getting this PC 2 years ago. I now know I should run the defrag tool more regularly.
Vista Disk Defrag Question
Mar 26, 2008Does Vista (Home Premium, in my case) defrag the hard drive(s) on its
own, without being scheduled to do so? I know I can manually force a
defrag, but what about unscheduled defrags?
Disk Defrag Just Keeps Analyzing My Disks
Jun 24, 2008I'm using the Home Premium version of Vista and my disk defrag just keeps analyzing my disks and never defrags them. Its worked before but now this has started to happen.
Disk Cleanup & Defrag. Scheduling
May 23, 2008Disk Cleanup and Defrag. Scheduling (Vista) When I schedule Disk Cleanup, a default schedule says cleanup will be activated when I am logged on. There is another option that says cleanup can be activated when I am logged on or off, but it is grayed out, and I am having difficulty gaining access to that option.
1. So, am I to assume that Disk Cleanup will only activate when I am logged on at the time specified? However, when I schedule Defrag., there are no options.
2. So, am I to assume Defrag. will activate if I am logged on or off at a specified time? Also, the Defrag, window tells you the last time Defrag. was runned.
3. Is there a log or another window I can check to see if Defrag. was completed?
Defrag Check Disk Did Not Work
May 7, 2010I'm new here, so I'll try not to screw up my post. I have Home Premium Vista, 64bit and 688GB hard drive(size when checking C: drive). I recently checked and it showed less than half full. Then a few days ago I tried saving a file and I got disk full message. I checked the c: drive again and it showed full- no space available, which should not be. I did a defrag, check disk and that did not work. I do remember seeing a warning around that time, but it vanished before I read it all. I think it said a file was not working or was corrupted and may have said something about 'Catalyst'. I found Catalyst Control Center on my computer, but that seems to be ATI card (graphics card?). I did delete a bunch of junk so it can now function, but latest check still shows only 72 MB available and that can't be.
SP1: After Defrag Show Reduced Disk Space
Mar 23, 2008I performed a clean install of Windows Vista Ultimate, updated all my drivers, installed SP1, and loaded all my applications. When finished, I had about 114GB of free space being reported. I ran defrag and after about 4-5 hours of running, the free space on that volume was reduced to 98GB. I did a clean disk and then a check disk afterwards and nothing changed. I just performed a defrag using the command line using the '-w' option and now I'm down to 90GB. Does anyone know what is going on?
Scheduling Disk Defrag, Task Failed
Oct 20, 2009Firstly I have checked this forum (and others) for the solution finding similar problems but still no joy. I am trying to schedule Vista defrag to run at night. However it doesn't run (or at least says it doesn't run) when scheduled to - in fact I don't think it runs at all(it says 'never' in the defrag control panel against 'last run'). I tested to see if the schedule works however in Task Scheduler it says that the task failed. I have tried deleting / disabling task in TS (but it reappears on reboot) and making sure that the properties in the TS task are ok, as well as 'running' the task in TS all to no avail. I've seen this but all the talk of 'command lines' etc baffles me!

Installing Auslogics Disk Defrag Boost Speed
Feb 8, 2009Have you ever heard the expretion 'Oh my...Country kids going to town'. Well...Country kid is here! I am very new to all this and kinda nurves. Hope I am doing this right. I have a laptop with Vista...recently got me a little virus '360'? or one of those Trojan dudes came over play without mom's permission. Got in lots of trouble!!! Anyway, I think I've got it all off but I am thinking that it needs to be defragged. Yes? No? Last night I decided to go ahead and start defragging. This morning it was still on the screen looking just like it did last night. I thought well stupid! did you click start? So I started it again...not sure what its doing? Know thinking maybe 360 or Trojan didn't go home like I asked them tooooo. Maybe?? I have ran all the disk clean ups and I use McAfee, they say the coast is clear. Here's were you guys come in...I was reading about installing Auslogics Disk Defrag and Auslogics Boost Speed. Do you thing this is something I should do or need?
Time Schronization: Change Date & Time Internet Time Tab And Chose A Time Standard To Connect
Aug 31, 2008I recently went into Change Date & Time Internet time tab and chose a time standard to connect with. After doing that I went onto the internet and connected with time.nist.gov and checked the time. After that I was no longer able to go into the internet time tab. It tells me that time.nist.gov is the time connection and I can't change it. It tells me I need to have permission to do this as administrator. I am the administrator! What goes here?
My Disk Is Getting Corrupt All The Time
Mar 23, 2008Something has been bothering me a lot in Vista 64 Ultimate SP1. Every now and then, when Windows starts, it says my disk structure is corrupt and I should run chkdsk in order to fix it. When I try to run CHKDSK under Vista, I get a 'insufficient disk space to fix master table (MFT)', and CHKDSK aborts. I can't create folders, files, Windows Update fails ...
The good thing is a have a dual boot system and when I choose XP, Windows XP detects that the Vista partition needs chkdsk and this time, chkdsk runs completely and fixes the Vista partition. So I can restart the computer, choose Vista partition again and this time everything will work fine.
Problem is, this is happening too often. Like every day. And it is such a hassle to start Vista, get the error message, restart, choose XP, fix Vista, restart, choose Vista and then have everything normal. Any of you guys have an idea on WHY my disk structure is getting corrupt all the time? My Vista installation is very recent, and I did a full format in the partition before installing it.
Checkdisk Hangs Every Time. Disk Reports OK?
Jun 7, 2008On Vista Home Premium, I've set Chkdsk to run but each time it hangs about three quarters of the way through step 5, at the same cluster each time. I've run the harddisk tests (SMART, surface scan etc) from the computer recovery console and it passes every test OK. If this a physical problem with the drive or a file system one? If it's the latter why can't Chkdsk fix it? It's a new computer should I go through the hassle of returning it to the manufacturer?
P.S. History: it's a brand new Lenovo laptop. When I first switched it on, it gave me that 'Vista didn't shut down properly last time' screen, but apart from that everything seemed OK until I got most of the way through all the security updates, cleaning up all the bundled software etc and Windows Update blankly refused to install SP1. I tried a system restore and that told me there was a disk error and to run Chkdsk. Chkdsk refused to run (something about the drive being locked) and in the end I did a factory reset. This is OK in that now all the updates have installed and there are no more errors, but I wanted to double check the disk, so invoked Chkdsk and... see above.
Long Boot Time To Install Disk
Mar 23, 2008With a formated hard drive on a Dell Dimension 2350, the Vista Home Premium Install Disk took eight minutes to get to the first screen. I subsequently cleaned out all cards from PCI slots and disabled everything I could in the BIOS and got the same results.
How To Defragment Pagefile.sys?
Feb 18, 2010Windows' built-in defragmenter has not been doing too well. Tried running Defraggler http://www.piriform.com/defraggler This is working much better and gives a graphical window with the progress. What I see is that C:pagefile.sys is hugely fragmented (1.5G and 500 fragments). This file seems to not to be able to be defragmented. Sort of makes sense since it is an important system file. Is there a way to get the pagefile to defragment?
which has a boot mode operation that can be enabled to defrag system files before they are locked. This does not seem to be working properly. It does not seem to be doing anything with the pagefile (even though it is in the explicit file list). Perhaps I have not found the correct command line switches yet. Both Defraggler and UltraDefrag were recommended by Kim Komando in her newsletter
Defragment So Slow
Feb 9, 2009I thought I had asked this before but upon searching I found that I did'nt and could not find anyone else posting about this, so here I go again. I like using Auslogics Defrag, but its taking an absolute eternity to defrag, I tend to defrag after every install of a game and I installed another game this afternoon and its still defragging now, is this normal?? does'nt feel like it
My only thought is and I'm just guessing that would it be at all down to the fact that I have disabled index searching, or even the system restore being on? I'm annoyed at the fact that its taken almost all afternoon to defrag and counting
Cannot Defragment And Restore
Mar 23, 2008I cannot defrag. or restore. The Dell tech. said that he found a few files which cannot be repaired by SFC/Scannow. I told him I probably needed to take it into a PC shop, as he wanted me to reinstall Vista and I don't think I can do that. He said to tell the shop to perform CHKDSK/R. Is this something I can do at home, find and delete corrupt files, without uninstalling and reinstalling Vista? I just used defrag.

Manually Or Auto Defragment?
Sep 17, 2009I am using Smart Defrag 1.20. The thing I would like to know is
1. Is it worth having your hard drive auto defragged?, or,
2. To manually defrag the hard drive, once a week?
As I think that running the auto defrag is using a bit to much in resources?
Auto Defragment And Norton 360
Apr 24, 2008I recently upgraded my Norton's Internet Security to Norton 360 - which contains a disk optimizer (defrag). Prior to upgrading Norton my Vista Defrag tool worked fine no problem and always on schedule. After the upgrade to Norton, I was setting up the program and the defrag tool in Norton said 'pending' which I left alone, because I was comfortable using the native defrag utility. However, now the vista defrag does not work. I went into the the vista tool to look at the schedule and it gave the last run date ( I had it set to weekly on Wed at 1am).
The next scheduled defrag said 'Never' despite the box checked 'run automatically'. I then unchecked the box and rechecked it, and then it gave the next scheduled date which I changed to that evening. I left it alone until the next morning and it not only did not defag per the schedule but the Vista tool said next scheduled defrag 'never' and Norton was back to Pending again. I have to assume this has something to do with Norton. I am told that Norton's defrag tool is tied to Vista's tool.
Automatic Defragment Does Not Occur
Jun 7, 2009I'm running Vista Home Premium. I have the Vista defrag set to go automatically on the first day of each month at 9 PM. The settings are correct on screen. However, it says next scheduled defrag = never, and the automatic defrag does not occur. I have to start it manually each month. I do not know what is wrong, nor how to fix it.

Defragment Doesn Working Properly
Nov 25, 2009After functioning properly since I got a new computer with 64-bit Vista nearly a year ago, the defragmenter now does its 'spinning' for about 5 minutes and indicates: 'Your file system performace can be improved. It is recommended that you defragment now.' When I click on 'Defragment now...' it spins again for about 5 minutes and repeats the same message. This repeats each time.
